The Cape Verde Islands
Cape Verde also known as Cabo Verde is a collection of Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, 385 miles (620km) west of Senegal, West Africa. Its official name is The Republic of Cape Verde and covers 4030sq Km's. The Islands are blessed with beautiful beaches, scenery and a climate reminiscent of the Caribbean.
The Main islands of Cape Verde
Santiago
The largest island, roughly twice the size on the Isle of Wight and home to the capital Praia and roughly half the islands total population. Santiago combines the best of the rugged islands, with an interior combining mountains with lush green valleys and in the southeast and north there are some fabulous beaches.
Sal
Sal is a fairly barren island, brown and cracked in the interior however the beaches are something else. International standard hotels sit right on the white sandy beach and in the south the clear blue waters and winds produce some great opportunities for windsurfing. Away from the hotels, one can walk for miles along the deserted coastline.
Boavista
Boavista is the closest island to the West African coast and the idyllic beaches are the definition of a picture perfect beach holiday destination. The interior has drifting dunes, stoney landscapes and palm tree oasis'. Sunbathing, surfing, swimming and long walks over isolated beaches and dunes are the order of the day here.
Maio
A very quiet island, the closest to Santiago but one that very few tourists stay on. The interior is flat like Sal and Boavista but there has been a heavy forestation programme here. Most tourists who do come here, arrive for the tranquil and relaxing atmosphere and lack of things to see and do.
